Aviation Safety Management: Moving from Compliance to Effectiveness.
Abstract:
Safety Management Systems have been implemented for a number of years in aviation organisations, which worked hard to achieve compliance with the relevant regulatory requirements. The question is whether it is enough to achieve compliance? The presentation will address the following:
· Describe the difference between compliance and effectiveness
· identify the challenging areas such as safety culture
· Propose ways of achieving SMS effectiveness

Short Bio:
Vangelis Demosthenous holds an MSc in Human Factors & Safety Management. He is the Managing Director of Kratis Training and Consulting Ltd. He also works in partnership with the University of Dublin in various research and industry projects as well as in teaching a Masters program. Prior to establishing Kratis he had worked for 18 years as a supervisor and a licensed aircraft engineer for Cyprus Airways. He is a member of the EASA Human Factors Collaborative Analysis Group. He has worked in the development of the current EASA human factors and SMS requirements. He has for many years been active in Aircraft Engineers International. He also served as a member of the executive board of Flight Safety Foundation Mediterranean.
